A hernia occurs when there is weakness in the surrounding tissue, a small or large hole can form at which point organs or tissues protrude through the hole and create a hernia. Hernias can occur in several different sites within the body including on the abdominal wall (Ventral Hernia), from previous surgery (Incisional Hernia), at the umbilicus (Umbilical Hernia), in the epigastrum (Epigastric Hernia), where blood vessels transverse (Femoral Hernia) or most commonly within the groin (Inguinal Hernia). Hernias are surgically fixed by strengthening the weakened tissue and placing mesh for additional strength. Most hernias can be treated with an open or laparoscopic procedure.
